We’re rolling out the blue carpet for you! To mark the new management’s first season opening, the MiR is celebrating the city, the ‘Gelsenkirchen Blue’ and itself with an extraordinary world premiere.

When the visionary architect Werner Ruhnau and the then-unknown artist Yves Klein joined forces a good 70 years ago,
they didn’t just create the most beautiful theatre building in the Ruhr region. Through their art, the two were also united by a vision of an open and more sensitive society. A ‘School of Sensitivity’ was to be founded; the necessary applications were submitted, but the project was never realised.

Now, the musical theatre collective Kommando Himmelfahrt draws inspiration from the utopia envisaged back then and brings it into the present day. Accompanied by a composition that flows through the entire theatre, you, the audience, will embark on an extraordinary journey from the forecourt, through the foyers, into the depths of art. Along the way, you will meet the founding fathers of the MiR, hear excerpts from Klein’s writings, and experience drama, music and ‘blue’ interventions. After passing through the ‘School of Sensibility’ and receiving your graduation certificate in the Main Auditorium, you’ll join the school staff for a toast with sparkling blue drinks at the Ball bleu in the legendary foyer of the Musiktheater. The band will be playing jazzy tunes whilst you dance your way into a new era of sensibility – how about a waltz with the blue sponge? Whether you’re wearing blue eyeshadow or blue jeans – join us in celebrating Gelsenkirchen and its MiR, and immerse yourself in Gelsenkirchen blue!

Accessibility information:
The audience will be guided in several groups through various stations within the MiR. There are stairs along the routes between the stations. The event is therefore, unfortunately, not fully accessible to people for whom stairs present a barrier. For those affected by this, there is the option to attend the event via an adapted route.
