Sono Yu

The South Korean baritone Sono Yu will join the NRW Opera Studio from the 2025/26 season. From 2023 to 2025, he was a member of OperAvenir at the Theatre Basel. His notable performances include roles in operas such as *Il barbiere di Siviglia*, *Carmen*, *Rigoletto*, *Mignon*, *La Traviata*, *The Cunning Little Vixen*, *Le nozze di Figaro*, *Tosca* and *Don Pasquale*.

Sono studied under the renowned mezzo-soprano Dr Hyunjoo Yun and the bass Attila Jun at Seoul National University and completed his Performer Diploma at Indiana University South Bend. He has won prizes in prestigious competitions, including the New Jersey Florham Opera Competition, the Premiere Competition and the Otto Edelmann Competition.

He has taken part in masterclasses with world-renowned singers such as the soprano Renée Fleming, the bass Kwangchul Youn and the bass Samuel Youn, and has been praised for his unique musicality.
