Volker Thiele

Volker Thiele has been working as a freelance set and costume designer since 1996, creating sets for theatre and opera.

His work in theatre with directors Thomas Ostermeier, Max Färberböck, Milos Lolic, Wulf Twiehaus and Christian Tschirner has taken him to venues including the Deutsches Theater Berlin, the Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz, the Nationaltheater Mannheim, the Schauspiel Leipzig and the Residenztheater Munich.

Together with Bettina Bruinier, he has created productions for opera and theatre at the Semperoper Dresden, the Nationaltheater Weimar, the Staatstheater Saarbrücken and the Schauspiel Frankfurt.

A long-standing collaboration with Frank Hilbrich has shaped his work in opera. Their joint projects have taken them to the Staatstheater Mainz, the Theater Freiburg, the National Theatres in Weimar and Mannheim, the Graz Opera, the Hanover State Opera, the Aalto Theatre Essen, the Theater Bremen, the Komische Oper Berlin, the Semperoper Dresden, as well as the Theater Basel and the Budapest State Opera.

Further musical theatre productions with the directors Ludger Engels, Kathrin Kondaurow, Eva-Maria Höckmayr, Thomas Fiedler, Agnessa Nefjodov, Gabriele Wiesmüller and Solvejg Bauer were staged at the theatres in Aachen and Bonn, as well as at the Konzert Theater Bern, the Landestheater Salzburg, the Staatsoperette Dresden and the Staatstheater Karlsruhe.
