Tosca
- Einführung
An opera in three acts by Giacomo Puccini Libretto by Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica, based on Victorien Sardou’s play of the same name
Tosca sings. The singer’s performances are met with frenzied acclaim. And Tosca is in love. Away from the stage, she savours her adrenaline-fuelled relationship with the painter Cavaradossi. But when he comes to the aid of a fugitive political prisoner and thus falls into the clutches of the notorious police chief Scarpia, Tosca’s worldview is shattered. She, who had always believed she led an apolitical life, must suddenly realise how wrong she was. Before Scarpia’s powerful arm can close around her, she kills the hated police chief. But what seemed like an act of liberation turns out to be a fallacy, for the system knows no mercy …
Since its world premiere in 1900, Puccini’s ‘Tosca’ has been an absolute evergreen in the musical theatre repertoire. The grand drama is condensed into a highly charged, deeply emotional score that constantly reminds the listener that Scarpia’s system of power is so perfidiously tightly woven that no one is spared. Following his successful debut with “Falstaff” in the 25/26 season, MiR Artistic Director Frank Hilbrich is once again staging a centrepiece of Italian opera.
