Alexander Eberle

Alexander Eberle was born in Zweibrücken, Saarland, in 1968. He studied church music, piano and conducting at the universities of Mainz and Düsseldorf. After working in the theatre in Trier and Osnabrück, he joined the Aalto Theatre in Essen in 1994 as a solo répétiteur with conducting duties and as assistant to the choir director. During the 1998/99 season, he was awarded the ‘Aalto Stage Prize’ and took over as director of the Philharmonic Choir. He eventually became choir director at the Aalto Theatre and, in 2004, founded the Aalto Children’s and Youth Choirs as well as the Philharmonic Chamber Choir.
He launched the ‘Singing in Essen’s Primary Schools’ network and is chairman of the Choral Directors’ Conference. In 2007, he founded the non-profit association ChorForum Essen, with the statutory aim of promoting choral work in the city in the Ruhr region. In 2011, the former St Engelbert’s Church became the association’s headquarters.
Alongside his theatre and concert work, Alexander Eberle spent many years as a lecturer in accompaniment and score study at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen. Since 2015, he has also been a lecturer at the Cologne University of Music and Dance and artistic director of the ChorForum Essen Foundation.
Since the 2016–17 season, Alexander Eberle has been choir director at the Musiktheater im Revier.
