The Cyber Flute

The online game based on *The Magic Flute*

PLOT

“This shall be your game!” So goes a line from Mozart’s opera *The Magic Flute*. This is precisely where the new game *The Cyber Flute* comes in. The computer game was developed, designed and programmed by young people in a series of workshops. This resulted in two different versions of the game, each offering a creative reinterpretation of the world of *The Magic Flute*. In the first version, players take on the role of directors of a digital opera production. On the virtual stage, Tamino, Papageno, Pamina and the other characters must be positioned in the right places to move the plot forward successfully. Placing the characters incorrectly causes chaos on stage. The second version transposes the story into space: Prince Tamino races through the galaxy in a spaceship, attempting to free Princess Pamina from the clutches of an all-powerful AI. Here, too, the aim is to skilfully position the characters on the playing field so that they can overcome the challenges and ensure Tamino’s mission is a success. In both versions of the game, players must pass tricky tests and think strategically to reach their goal. Let the games begin!

INSTRUCTIONS

Game concept:
In ‘Cyberflöte’, you direct your own opera production by placing the characters on the game board. The scene starts automatically as soon as you leave the characters standing on a square on the board. All characters move according to fixed rules. Only by finding the right combination can you stage each scene and solve the puzzle.

Aim of the game:
Place the correct characters on the game board in such a way that they fulfil the respective task. The challenge is only successfully completed if the positions and character combinations are correct.

Gameplay:
The game progresses automatically, scene by scene:
1. The first scene begins.
2. Select pieces and place them on the game board. The pieces move in the direction they are facing.
3. Wait for about 5 seconds. Do not move the pieces any further at this stage.
4. The scene plays out.
5. If you’ve done everything correctly, the next scene begins. If not, try again.

Important notes:
You decide for yourself which characters to use.
Each character has a fixed range of vision.
Characters can influence one another.
The solution is found by trial and error.

Pieces:
Tamino: Prince, 1 step straight ahead
Papageno: bird-catcher, 2 steps straight ahead
Pamina: Princess, 4 steps straight ahead
Papagena: Bird-catcher, 2 steps forwards
Queen of the Night: 1 step straight ahead
Three ladies: Friends of the Queen of the Night, 2 steps forwards

Combinations:
Certain characters change their abilities when they are on the board together.
Example: Tamino + Papageno → 1 extra space

End of the game:
Have you successfully staged 5 scenes? Applause, applause! Congratulations! Why not drop a line to the artistic director of the MiR? Who knows, maybe you’ll get the chance to stage a production in Gelsenkirchen yourself one day?!
