2nd Sunday Concert
To hell with it! Demonic forces are at work in these pieces. The ‘Diabolus in Musica’ runs riot in many horned guises. Luigi Boccherini called his ‘Sturm und Drang’ symphony ‘The Devil’s House’. In a dream, Giuseppe Tartini had struck a diabolical pact, the reward for which was the completion of the immortal ‘Devil’s Trill Sonata’. It can be heard in an arrangement by the legendary violinist Fritz Kreisler.
Things turned out worse for the legendary womaniser Don Juan. In Mozart’s opera ‘Don Giovanni’, the insatiable womaniser is condemned to hell. A punishment he also suffers in Gluck’s ballet ‘Don Juan’. The violinist and conductor Thomas Zehetmair is one of the outstanding artistic figures of our time.
