Thomas Helmut Heep
Choreographer
Thomas Helmut Heep is a choreographer for musicals, operettas and operas.
He studied theatre studies at Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz and, at the same time, furthered his training in ballet, jazz and musical theatre dance. He gained his first experience as a choreographer at university with the group Musical Inc., as well as through his work with older people with dementia in Mainz, with whom he developed the theatre evening ‘Mit der Zeit’.
After completing his studies, Thomas Helmut Heep initially worked as a director, holding posts in Frankfurt am Main, Dresden, Meiningen, Salzburg and Aachen, amongst other places. With his first production as both director and choreographer at the Staatstheater Meiningen, his artistic focus shifted increasingly towards choreography. Today he works exclusively as a choreographer. However, his earlier work as a director continues to shape his choreographic approach to this day.
As a choreographer, he has taken on engagements in Dresden, Weimar, Cottbus, Schwerin, Wiesbaden, Oldenburg and Saarbrücken, amongst other places. Alongside his work in theatres, he choreographs projects in the events and entertainment sector, including productions for the band maybebop and galas featuring international drag superstars.
Furthermore, Thomas Helmut Heep develops new material and plays in collaboration with the writers Carsten Golbeck and Ellie Carina Lorscheid. As a choreographer, he is also part of the winning team of the 2025 ROM Foundation Prize.
