Somaya Alferdawi

Seamstress and designer

SomayaAlferdawi works as a dressmaker and designer, specialising in creative tailoring, embroidery and innovative design. In her own studio, she offers a wide range of services – from simple alterations and repairs to the creation of bespoke evening gowns, wedding dresses and theatre costumes. For eight years, Somaya successfully ran her own workshop in Syria, which specialised in tailoring, design, embroidery and decoration. In addition to creating exclusive garments, she also took on the complete planning and decoration of events and celebrations. In addition, Somaya successfully ran a sewing course at Caritas Gelsenkirchen for six years. The course was aimed at people aged 20 and over and sought to promote integration, cultural exchange and the teaching of basic sewing skills. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she volunteered and, in collaboration with Caritas Gelsenkirchen, sewed more than 1,000 face masks. She worked alongside a team of 25 people to provide active support during the crisis. Since January, she has been running the costume workshop for the BaRockOper on Josefstraße, where she designs costumes for the production.
