Melchior Silbersack
Costume designer
Melchior Silbersack works as a freelance costume designer and theatre and dance teacher. He studied theatre studies, education and English literature and culture at Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, before specialising in collective costume design in relation to sexuality and gender whilst undertaking a Master’s degree in theatre education at the Berlin University of the Arts. Since 2022, he has held a wide variety of teaching posts in this field and works with people of all ages on clothing- and costume-related topics such as the queer potential of fashion, breaking down stereotypical ways of seeing, and questioning social norms (on stage).
Following numerous costume designs for performances and in the independent theatre scene, Melchior Silbersack is now engaged as a costume designer at theatres and opera houses throughout Germany. At Leipzig Opera, he worked closely with director Marlene Hahn on Sir Peter Maxwell Davies’ *Majesty & Madness* as well as Verdi’s *Falstaff*. In the coming season, he will be designing the costumes for the Leipzig Ballet’s second instalment of the ‘Black Box/Elegien – Black Box II’ programme, as well as creating the costumes for Anne Jung’s new production in the double bill ‘Sibelius / Bruckner’. In addition to his work with Lucia Reichard at the Musikalische Komödie (‘Ein wenig Farbe’) and Johannes Pölzgutter at the Mittelsächsisches Theater (‘Cabaret’), his work on Rossini’s ‘Il barbiere di Siviglia’ and Loewe’s ‘My Fair Lady’ with director Sonja Trebes took him to the Landestheater Coburg.
