Martin Miotk

Set designer

Martin Miotk has been working internationally as a set and costume designer since 2010. He began his training at the Hamburg State Opera, where he worked as a theatre painter and sculptor. He then studied Fine Art and Photography under Dirk van der Meulen, as well as set and costume design under Hartmut Meyer at the Berlin University of the Arts, where he graduated with distinction. A scholarship from the ‘Pall Mall Foundation’ took him to New York City. As an artist in residence, he worked at the renowned School of Visual Arts and at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. In his work, he combines Baroque opulence with contemporary pop and subculture. During this time, he designed sets for Off-Broadway theatres and developed a visual language that oscillates between high culture and pop iconography. The contemporary music scene also had a significant influence on his work. Here, he expands on the ‘camp’ aesthetic and employs it as a central theatrical device. His works are characterised by exaggerated forms, humorous subversion and a deliberate rewriting of traditional stage aesthetics. At the same time, he is further developing his work as a set designer, costume designer and director for interdisciplinary productions that combine film, theatre and digital media. The music-theatrical video game essay “Opera – A Future Game” (directed by Michael von zur Mühlen, set design by Martin Miotk) is awarded the prestigious “Der Faust” theatre prize in the Sound and Media category in 2023. In 2025, Miotk is nominated for the FAUST Prize in the Costume Design category for “Proteus 2481” by Thomas Köck at the Münchner Kammerspiele.
