Jay Myung
Accompaniment at the NRW Opera Studio
Born in 2000 in Seoul, South Korea, Jay Myung began playing the piano at the age of eight at the Music Prodigy Academy, an institution run by the Seoul Arts Centre. Between 2012 and 2015, he received regular tuition in choral conducting and choral accompaniment at the Yewon School in Seoul. During this time, he gained valuable stage experience as a member of the Seoul Arts Centre choir, where he performed key works from the classical repertoire such as Mozart’s Requiem, Haydn’s The Creation and Handel’s Messiah. These experiences sparked his interest in theatre production and led to further artistic endeavours.
In 2013, Jay Myung gave his first solo concert at the Kumho Art Hall in Seoul, which opened up further performance opportunities and provided important impetus for his artistic career. In 2015, he took part in a masterclass in Halle (Germany) led by Prof. Roland Krüger and subsequently decided to continue his studies in Germany. In 2016, he passed the entrance examination at the Berlin University of the Arts and studied piano there in the class of Prof. Pascal Devoyon, where he completed his Bachelor’s degree with top marks.
Alongside his training as a soloist, Jay Myung has been involved in various competitions and projects. In 2018, he was awarded the Haydn Prize at the 18th International Ettlingen Competition and, in the same year, won first prize at the ‘Verfemte Musik’ interpretation competition in Schwerin. Furthermore, in December 2023, he performed five contemporary works by Martin H. Zeller in a world premiere.
His artistic activities encompass a wide range of solo and chamber music performances. He has worked with renowned orchestras and ensembles, including the Sinfonietta Berlin, and has performed as a pianist and lieder accompanist in various cities such as Seoul, Madrid, Valencia, Rostock, Detmold, Wiesbaden and Berlin. His concert engagements have included the Musikalische Sommer Ostfriesland, Mutationen Rostock, Kammermusik im Schloss Glienicke and the Piano Salon Christophori Berlin.
In December 2023, Jay Myung made his debut as part of a piano duo at the Embassy of the Republic of Latvia in Berlin. Since then, he has also worked as a guest accompanist in several opera productions, including *La Traviata* and *Im weißen Rössl* at the Brandenburger Theater under the musical direction of David Holzinger.
From the 2025/26 season onwards, Jay Myung will be a member of the NRW Opera Studio.
