At the end of the world
Restart – The year is 2032: interpersonal energies have deteriorated to such an extent that the entire global energy system is on the brink of collapse. In the world premiere of this science-fiction mini-opera, the audience, wearing VR headsets, stumbles through dystopian future scenarios towards the end of the world. This end begins in a virtual feel-good computer game. Physicist Kassandra and sociologist Judith are passing the time in the game, still unaware that their familiar reality is on the brink of collapse. From level to level, more and more glitches become apparent; missions repeat themselves or cut short. Meanwhile, the latest research findings in nuclear physics warn of an imminent breakdown of fundamental laws of physics. Particles accelerate in an endless loop, whilst global conflicts rage on the radio. Kassandra and Judith lose control. What do you do when the world is falling apart? RESTART: You start all over again… MiR.LAB’s first opera production premieres in a vacant open-plan office on the forecourt of Gelsenkirchen railway station and is also part of the Places Festival 2024.
