What would you change about your town if you could reinvent it?

At PLAY THE CITY, we turn Buer into our sandbox, take the town apart and put it back together again.

The play club is for anyone who’s ever built their own world – in Minecraft or in their imagination.

We head out and take a closer look: how do people move through the town, and what happens between them? We discover shapes, surfaces and details, scan objects and listen to sounds and noises. Everything we find can become material for something new: 3D scans and gaming, sound and music, dance and text.

Our meeting place is a vacant shop in the heart of Buer. Bit by bit, we’re transforming it into our own city. We build, play, experiment and test what happens when we put things together differently. In the process, we’re creating our own version of Buer – somewhere between a game world, an installation and a stage.

In February, we’ll be opening the shop to the public for a whole weekend. We’ll then showcase what we’ve developed and built together. Family, friends, neighbours and anyone who’s curious are welcome to pop by, explore the space and immerse themselves in our world.

You don’t need any previous experience in gaming, dance, writing or music to get involved. You’ll learn everything alongside us. Just bring your curiosity and your ideas.

All genders, all nationalities, all body types welcome

Who we are

Agnetha Jaunich is a performer and dancer and is brand new to Musiktheater im Revier in Gelsenkirchen. She has previously created a theatre piece using her own avatar, is always on the lookout for the best vegan cake in town, and believes there should be far more covered park benches where you can sit comfortably even in bad weather.

Together with Agnetha, you’ll explore the city through movement, whilst also taking time to listen to your inner self and sense what a city can feel like.

Lukas Tintareanu

Lukas Tintareanu is a media artist from Cologne who combines analogue materials with digital tools. For his latest project, he digitised clay figures to make them playable in a virtual landscape. Alongside his artistic work, he shares his knowledge of video games and advocates for innovative game formats that prioritise collaboration and creativity.

With Lukas, you’ll transform urban elements into computer files and use them to create new creatures and structures.

Christodoulos Apostolidis

Christodoulos Apostolidis is a musician. He loves popping down to the newsagent’s to find the most exciting fizzy drinks, adores neon yellow and wishes there were more places to charge his headphones on public transport, in case he’s forgotten to do so at home yet again.

With Chris, you’ll collect sounds around the city, break them down and alter them, and turn them into music. Piece by piece, this is how the soundtrack to your own world takes shape.

Rebekka Jochem and Tilman Aumüller will also be joining us for a weekend each. Rebekka is an expert in technology and will help us build our own sensors that let us make music through touch. Tilman knows how to use plenty of imagination to create something new and will take us into the world of board games.

From December, there’ll also be a stage-building workshop for anyone who’d rather reassemble the city with a hammer and a paintbrush.
