Ilaria Lanzino

Ilaria Lanzino works throughout Europe as a director, lecturer and librettist. After completing her vocal training, she studied German language and literature at Ca’ Foscari University in Venice. She gained her first theatre experience as a chorus singer at the Theater an der Wien and subsequently as a directing trainee and assistant at, amongst others, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Opera Ballet Vlaanderen, Theater Dortmund and the Aalto Theater. At the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, she was a permanent stage manager and assistant director, and worked there as a member of the directing team on productions including *Der Ring des Nibelungen*.

As a director, she has worked at venues such as the MusikTheater an der Wien (Caccini’s *La liberazione di Ruggiero*, Gasparini’s *Ambleto*), the Staatstheater Nürnberg (*La Traviata*, ‘Lucia di Lammermoor’, ‘Pimpinone’, ‘Herzog Blaubarts Burg’, ‘L’elisir d’amore’, Walpurgis’ ‘Talestri’), the Leipzig Opera (‘Le nozze di Figaro’, Musgrave’s *Mary, Queen of Scots*), the Aalto Music Theatre in Essen (*My Fair Lady*), the Deutsche Oper am Rhein (*Nabucco*, *Der Kaiser von Atlantis*, Ronchetti’s *Das fliegende Klassenzimmer*), the Wiesbaden State Theatre (Moniuszko’s *Straszny dwór*), the Dortmund Theatre (*Don Giovanni*, Tidrow’s *Kirsas Musik*), the Graz Opera (*La Cenerentola*), the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma (*La Resurrezione*) and the Gothenburg Opera (*Luisa Miller*).
Ilaria Lanzino’s productions have received numerous awards, including first place in the European Opera Direction Prize in 2020. In 2023, she received the International Opera Award in the ‘Best Rediscovery’ category for her production of Stanisław Moniuszko’s fragment ‘Jawnuta’, created for the Teatr Wielki in Poznań. The following year, her production of ‘Mary, Queen of Scots’ was also nominated in the same category. Ilaria Lanzino also teaches as a lecturer in stagecraft at the University of Music in Würzburg.
