Alexander Djurkov Hotter

The Venezuelan costume designer Alexander Djurkov Hotter initially studied architecture at the Technical University of Berlin before completing an apprenticeship as a bespoke tailor in Düsseldorf in 2015. He subsequently worked closely with the renowned costume designer Moidele Bickel, who became his most influential and valuable artistic mentor. This was followed by assistant roles at, amongst others, the Schauspielhaus Frankfurt, the Salzburg Festival, the Staatsoper Unter den Linden and Den Norske Opera & Ballett in Oslo, on productions directed by Luc Bondy, Calixto Bieito, Dieter Dorn and Shirin Neshat.

His first independent projects took him to the Akademietheater München, the Theater Freiburg, the IST Festival in Amsterdam, the Theater Dessau, the Mecklenburg State Theatre and the Bühnen Bern, in collaboration with directors Thomas Helmut Heep, Maike Bouschen and Andreas Rosar.

At the Bielefeld Theatre, he designed the costumes for the German premiere of Marc-André Dalbavie’s opera *Charlotte Salomon* and for *Das Rheingold*, both directed by Mizgin Bilmen. He also worked with her on the stage adaptation of Ingeborg Bachmann’s *Malina* at the Theater Bern and at the Badisches Staatstheater in Karlsruhe.

Further engagements took him to the Norske Teatret in Oslo and the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus, where he worked with the American director Robert Wilson. He has enjoyed a long-standing collaboration with the directors Michael Schachermaier and Martin G. Berger. With Berger, he staged *Il barbiere di Siviglia* and *Nixon in China* at the Theater Dortmund, as well as *Mazeppa* and *Powder Her Face* at the Volksoper Wien, *Der rote Wal* at the Stuttgart Opera, and *Kublai Khan* at the Theater an der Wien.
